Drugstore lipstick dupe: Maybelline Color Sensational "Pink Me Up" vs. Bobbi Brown "Tulle"

If you're a loyal reader of this blog, then you probably know of my undying love for Bobbi Brown "Tulle" Lip Color (retail: $22). It's just one of those pinky-brown shades that I can throw on with *anything* and it always looks good. It's the "Old Faithful" of lip color for me and about the only thing I don't like about it is the price tag.

So naturally I gravitated toward the shade "Pink Me Up" when I bought my first Maybelline Color Sensational Lipstick (retail: $7.49) but, when I bought it, I truly had no idea how close it was to BB's "Tulle". Let's take a look:

(In all photos, Bobbi Brown "Tulle" is on the left and Maybelline "Pink Me Up" is on the right.)

It was really difficult to get an accurate picture of these colors on my camera but I hope you can see that, with or without flash, they are pretty darn similar.

Here is the best swatch I could capture:

As you can probably see, "Tulle" has a bit more orange to it while "Pink Me Up" has a bit more blue. But when you put the color on your lips, I swear to you, you cannot tell the different. It's pretty amazing.

The only difference, in my opinion, is that the Maybelline Color Sensational lipstick is a little more creamy. Other than that, I'd say that "Pink Me Up" passes the dupe test with flying colors!

  1. Is the BB lipstick always flat like that or did you just used it a lot? I guess I shouldn't doubt you when you say it is one of your favorites! I'm definitely going to try these Maybelline lipsticks now!

  4. Hey Kitty! Good for you! After all those hauls, I can totally understand why you're currently on a no-buy. :)

Hey Flannery! I know, right? Finding a dupe is like stumbling across a goldmine. lol. :)

  5. I'm not much a lipstick girl - it's lip gloss for me most of the time. but I really love this shade! It reminds me of an old Clinique lipstick I adored. Thanks for the tip - I'm adding this to my list for my next Target run!

  7. Hi I'm looking for the hot pink that Emily DiDonato wore for the Maybelline Color Sensational commercial http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRE1HqCH07E

I was told that Bit of Berry is the one, but judging from some other site's pictures, it couldn't possibly be the shade I'm looking to buy. Do you happen to know by looking at the youtube which shade is the hot pink one? THANK YOU! It's 18 seconds into the video. I'd appreciate it.

  8. Oh gosh, I wish I could help you but I don't know...it looks like a *very* vibrant shade in that video but I don't remember seeing such a hot pink in the store. I can tell you that it's definitely NOT "Pink Me Up!" lol! Hum...do you have access to a drugstore where you can go and look at the shades for yourself? That's the only thing I can suggest to you because, as you know, online swatches aren't always true-to-life. I'm sure if you saw the pinks in person you could spot the hot pink shade. Plus, if you get it home and it's not the right color, you can always return it (just save your receipt). Sorry I can't help you more! :(

  9. I love your site! I have to disagree though on this Maybelline lippie being a dupe for BB Tulle. I also have both, and yes I can see how they look similar in the pictures. On my lips, however, Tulle is much, much more neutral pink than Pink Me Up. Pink Me Up is definitely a "stronger" pink with a stronger blue undertone than Tulle. They are both wonderful lippies, however (and as a fair cool-toned gal myself, the Maybelline one probably looks better on me anyway).

Anyway, this has been my experience, though I am sure experiences may vary somewhat based on your skintone, liptone, etc. :)

  10. Hi bestscreennameever! Thanks for the comment. I loved reading your experience--it just goes to show how differently colors can look on each of us. I'm warm-toned with pigmented lips, and on me, these two shades look almost identical. So much so that I really can't tell them apart if I've got one shade on one lip and the other shade on the other lip. But I can totally see how one could look much cooler than the other. It's funny because I've seen other dupe posts on other blogs where the two colors looked so close on the person, but when I try them they look completely different. Oh well...as you said, they're both so pretty so I guess it doesn't hurt to own 'em both! :)

  11. Well luckily I found out that you can open the tubes at the store LOL. I picked up Coral Crush, and I want to go get Pink Peony next. I LOVE the smell of these lipsticks! They remind me of marshmallows. Yum! Coral Crush is redder than I expected, but it was the only one I opened that was super bright. I like it, though. I didn't own a reddish color yet, so this is perfect. I saw a swatch of Pink Peony, then Googled peonies and the colors looked soooo much like whatever was used on the model! I can't wait to pick up my next shade.

  12. Hey Miss Kari! Oh thank goodness you discovered that you could open the tubes! I would never in a million years be able to decide on a purchase without seeing these first! lol. :) I'll definitely have to check out Pink Peony. It sounds gorgeous! Thanks so much! xo
